I am still preparing the story about ‘Pos’, ‘Company’ and how the shrimp trade system works in Tarakan. In the meantime, please enjoy some pictures of tambak in northern part of East Kalimantan.
I tried to arrange these pictures based on management process ( which does not always succeed) from early stages of capturing mother shrimp, hatchery, shrimp farming to cold storage.
top left picture is the picture of one of the mother shrimp trader I met in Tarakan. he told me that shrimp fisher use to use trammel net (as shown in the picture) to catch shrimp. He continued that that gear was more Eco-friendly compare to the mini trawler which become popular in this 5 years. He used to get mother shrimp from the trammel netter. Nowadays, he has to buy mother shrimp from trawler, because trammel netter never never got enough mother shrimp to be sold to the trader even though that he realized that the quality of mother shrimp are lower compare to those caught using trammel net.
Top right picture is the picture of mother shrimp ready to lay their eggs.
Bottom right: This yellow scoop is a measurement tool to measure the amount of shrimp fry. As stated by the worker in that nursery: “use this you will get exactly 3000 fry of PL 11” (PL 11=post larvae, 11 days old)
Bottom left: This is the shrimp fry, ready to be stocked to shrimp farms. I took this picture from one of nursery in Tarakan. This shrimp fry originated from East Java.

Top left: Tambak from the height.
Top right:Nipah which are still maintained around tambak. According to the pond owner, this nipas has two fungtion: as the water filter so that the could get good quality of water for his tambak and as the fortress that protects his ponds from robbers.
Bottom right: 'pondok' or hut for the pond workers.
Bottom left: One of tambak in one of the islands near Tarakan, East Kalimantan. This tambak was in the drying process after harvest. There was shrimp left in the deeper part.
------------------------------
The water table published by Navy used by the farmers to mark the harvesting time, time to open/close the water gate to 'wash' tambak.
